BIMA is an insurance technology company offering insurance and mobile health services to emerging markets that is headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden and was founded in 2010 by Gustaf Agarston. The two primary products offered by BIMA are BIMA LIFE (life insurance) and BIMA Health (health insurance). BIMA Health offers customers unlimited access to BIMA qualified doctors over the phone which helps customers save money and time by not having to visit medical centres. Services include with BIMA Health include medication support, access to personalized health records, and insurance coverage for hospital stays.
On March 1, 2013 BIMA completed their series A funding round with $7.2 million in funding from LeapFrog Investments (lead investor), Millicom Systems, and Kinnevik AB.
On December 2, 2014 BIMA completed their series B funding round with $5 million in funding from Digicel.
On July 1, 2015 BIMA completed their series C funding round with $20 million in funding from Kinnevik AB (lead investor), Millicom Systems, LeapFrog Investments, and Digicel.
On December 19, 2017 BIMA completed their series D funding round with $97 million in funding from Allainz X (lead investor), Millicom Systems, Kinnevik AB, and Digicel. The company plans on using their series D funding to expand its product line to include life insurance, accident insurance, health insurance, and teledoctor services in each of the 14 markets it operates in. At the time of receiving their series D funding BIMA had approximately 24 million customers around the world.
In 2019 BIMA won the 'Best Innovation for Health and Biotech' award at the GSMA GLOMO Awards.
