Bain Capital Private Equity was founded by American politician, businessman and former presidential candidate Mitt Romney and Bill Bain in 1984. Romney left the firm in 1999 for the Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City. In 2000, he sold his stake in the firm to his partners in a complicated agreement that gave him a declining share of firm profits throughout the next 10 years.
