Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is a public university located in Varanasi, India. It was founded in 1915 by Madan Mohan Malaviya. The university operates in the education, higher education, and university industries. Its motto is "Knowledge imparts immortality".
BHU is accredited by multiple organizations, including the National Assessment and Accreditation Council, the Bar Council of India, the University Grants Commission of India, and the National Council of Teacher Education. The university is also affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, the Association of Indian Universities, and the Medical Council of India.
The university is composed of several subsidiaries, including the Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Mahila Maha Vidyalaya, Faculty of Ayurveda, Banaras Hindu University, Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Bharat Kala Bhavan, Banaras Hindu University, South campus, and Banaras Hindu University Students' Union.
In addition to its main campus in Varanasi, BHU has a headquarters located in the same city. The university is an instance of both an organization and an educational institute.
