The game was released on February 5, 2009 in Japan, published by Sony Computer Entertainment, and on October 7, 2009 in North America, published by Atlus. In Europe, the game was released on June 25, 2010, published by Namco Bandai.
The game is set in a world inspired by medieval Europe, but completely fictionalized. The player, controlling a hand-created character, finds himself in the kingdom of Boletaria, which has been ravaged by a cursed fog that summons demons greedy for human souls. The game is presented as the ideological successor to the King's Field series[3], past games by the same developer, gameplay involving a character creation system with an emphasis on collecting loot in combat with enemies, in a series of non-linear levels in the middle of the game world, while using a unique online multiplayer system integrated into the single game, where players can leave helpful notes and warnings that can be found in other players' worlds.
Upon release in Japan and North America, Demon's Souls was well-received by critics and won quite a few awards. While praising the dark fantasy art design, the variety of character combat skills and the integrated online multiplayer, they praised the game's high difficulty, presenting it as a real challenge.
