East China Normal University (ECNU) is a public higher education institution founded on October 16, 1951, and headquartered in Shanghai, China. It is accredited by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission. ECNU is involved in various industries, including electronic design automation, education, higher education, and university education services. The institution carries the motto, "Seek truth, foster originality and live up to the name of teacher", as well as "Pursue what we have not been taught and practice what we are going to teach".
As an organization and educational institute, ECNU has been instrumental in the development of six patents. It holds the Chinese alias "华东师范大学" and works within its locations in both China and Shanghai.
ECNU has two subsidiaries: New York University Shanghai and East China Normal University Press.
