HSBC is a British multinational banking and financial services company. In March 1865, founder Thomas Sutherland, a young Scotsman working in Hong Kong for a large shipping firm, founded the bank.
In 1864, Sutherland sailed along the South China coast and upon reading an article on Scottish banking, it inspired him to create a new bank. After his time in Hong Kong, Sutherland knew that local and foreign trade in Hong Kong and at ports in China and Japan had increased rapidly in previous years and that businesses needed better local banking facilities.
