Instituto Superior Técnico (IST), also known as Tecnico Lisbon, is one of largest schools of engineering, science, technology, and architecture in Portugal. The school is part of the University of Lisbon. Rogério Colaço is the current president at Tecnico Lisboa. Técnico ranked 11th in the US News ranking of European engineering schools in 2018.
IST has campuses in Lisbon, Oeiras, and Loures. The school currently has over 10,000 students enrolled. IST focuses strongly on research in the areas of technology and science. IST has offerings in the areas of undergraduate, graduate and lifelong training, and Research, Development and Innovation (RD&I). The school currently offers more than twenty joint master's programs with several international schools. It also participates in joint doctoral programs with MIT, CMU, UT-Austin, and EPFL.
The Instituto Superior Técnico was formed from the division of the Industrial and Commercial Institute of Lisbon in 1911. Engineer Alfredo Bensaude was the first director of IST, serving as director from 1911-1922.The Alemeda Campus was constructed in 1927 in central Lisbon. In 1930, the school, along with three others, joined the Technical University of Lisbon. Over the next few decades, the school increased in size, gaining new research facilities and higher student numbers; by 2000, IST expanded with the Taguspark Campus located in Oeiras.
