José Echegaray (born April 19, 1832, in Madrid, Spain, and died September 14, 1916, also in Madrid) was a Spanish playwright, civil engineer, politician, writer, engineer, mathematician, economist, and professor. He is best known for his numerous and brilliant compositions that have revived the great traditions of Spanish drama in an individual and original manner.
Echegaray was educated at the Complutense University of Madrid and held Spanish citizenship. Throughout his career, he was involved in various genres, including dramaturgy and theatre. One of his notable works is the play "El gran Galeoto".
In 1904, José Echegaray received the Nobel Prize in Literature, being recognized for his contributions to Spanish drama.
