Leopold Ružička was a chemist born on September 13, 1887, in Vukovar, which was part of Austria-Hungary at that time. He held citizenship of Croatia, Switzerland, and Austria-Hungary. Ružička was educated at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and specialized in biochemistry.
Throughout his career, he was known for his research on terpene. Ružička's doctoral advisor was Hermann Staudinger, and he had several notable doctoral students, including Arie Jan Haagen-Smit, Albert Eschenmoser, Moses Wolf Goldberg, and George Büchi.
Leopold Ružička received prestigious awards for his work in the field of chemistry. In 1938, he won the Marcel Benoist Prize, and he received the 1939 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Ružička passed away on September 26, 1976, in Mammern.
