Lotfi A. Zadeh was a mathematician, engineer, professor, computer scientist, and journalist who held citizenship in Azerbaijan, the United States, and Iran . He was born on February 4, 1921[,] in Baku, and died on September 6, 2017[,] in Berkeley, California .
Zadeh was educated at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Columbia University, the University of Tehran, and the Fu Foundation School of Engineering and Applied Science . His doctoral advisor was John R. Ragazzini .
Zadeh's notable work includes contributions to the "Fuzzy set" concept . He supervised several doctoral students, such as Joseph Goguen, John Yen, Soumitra Dutta, Pravin Varaiya, Kapali Eswaran, Richard Mortensen, and Brian Glüss .
Throughout his career, Zadeh received various awards including the Eringen Medal and the Dostlug Order .
