Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) München is a research university in Munich, Germany. In 2020, the university had over 52,000 students enrolled, 780 professors performing research and teaching (at LMU and its hospital), and €308 million of sponsored research funds. A self-governing public organization, LMU is organized into a central governing and administrative structure and has eighteen faculties.
The university dates back to 1472 when the Hohe Schule, "high school," was founded by Duke Ludwig IX of Bavaria-Landshut in Ingolstadt. It was the first university in the Altbayern region and the eleventh within the territories of the Holy Roman Empire.

- University Governing Board—consists of the executive board, the deans, the university's women representative and one representative from the academic and non-academic staff groups, and the student body
- Board of University Representatives—consists of sixteen elected members together with the Women’s Representative and her deputy
- University Council—comprised of ten elected members of the Board of University Representatives and ten prominent individuals from the fields of science, culture, business and the professions
- Board of Trustees—promotes the university’s interests in the public sphere and helps the university to fulfill its core functions. The Board of Trustees is made up of twenty-five individuals who have demonstrated a particular commitment to the university’s wellbeing
- Councils—academic staff council, non-academic staff council, council of elected student representatives at faculty level
