Shchyrets is a village in the Lviv district founded in 1113.
Shchyrets is one of the oldest cities of the Russian state, it has been known since the 12th century. Shchyrets has had the city status since 1397, but in 1918-1939 it lost it. The status of an urban-type settlement was granted in 1940. There are two popular versions of the name of the town. The river flows through Shchyrets. It used to be full of water and rich in fish. The locals said "sincere fish", so the settlement was named Shchyrets. Another version reports that the local people were surprisingly sincere.
Shchyrets was first mentioned in the chronicle in 1126 as a place of negotiations between two brothers, Princes Vladimir and Rostislav, to unite three Russian principalities: Zvenigorod, Przemyśl and Terebovlya into one.
The development of Shchyrets in the following centuries was due to the fact that the town was on the so-called "salt" trade route from Drohobych. Szczyrec not only received the Magdeburg Law, but also became the center of the county of the same name. These facts indicate the important position of the town in the then Galicia.
