Slovenské elektrárne is the biggest power generating company in Slovakia and one of the largest in Central and Eastern Europe. The company's line of business includes energy generation, imports, exports and sales of complex energy services. It operates 31 hydro, 2 nuclear, 2 thermoelectric and 2 solar power plants.
In 2018, Slovenské elektrárne generated 18,638 GWh of electricity. Net electricity deliveries of Slovenské elektrárne in 2018 totalled 16,778 GWh. Almost 90% of the electricity the company delivered was generated without carbon dioxide emissions – combining nuclear, hydroelectric, solar and biomass.
The company's history dates back to 1942 when the joint-stock company Slovenské elektrárne was formed. The company in its current form was founded in 2002, as a new business that operated nuclear, thermoelectric and hydroelectric power plants and the accompanying nuclear waste management and decommissioning facility. In 2004, Slovenské elektrárne became a part of the Enel Group, an €839M bid for 66% share capital was accepted. The company headquarters are located in Bratislava.
Slovenské elektrárne operates 4 reactor units, 2 at Bohunice Nuclear Power Plant and 2 at Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant, supplying more than half of electricity consumed in Slovakia. All four units feature pressurised water reactors, type WWER 440, with high safety levels ensured by the robust design including 1.5m thick reinforced concrete containment, huge volumes of cooling water and triple redundancy passive and active safety systems.
2 new reactors at the Mochovce Nuclear Power Plant are under construction, as of December 2019 Mochovce unit 3 is 99.3% complete and Mochovce unit 4 is 87.1% complete. Each unit will have an output of 471 MWe. Construction of these units is the largest private investment in the history of Slovakia, with Slovak and renowned foreign companies working on the project, including:
