It mainly occurred in the Holy Roman Empire, but also involved several European countries such as France, the Czech Republic, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Spain, and Saxony (wine region). The war was originally named after religious persecution in the Roman Empire.

Several other prominent figures were also involved, such as Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, Louis XIII of France, Cardinal Richelieu, Axel Oxenstierna, Johan Banér, Anders Torstenson, and Carl Gustaf Wrangel.
