Eminent cardiologist Evgeny Ivanovich Chazov was born on June 10, 1929 in Nizhny Novgorod.
In 1953, he graduated from Kiev Medical Institute (now - Oleksandr Bohomolets National Medical University). He was admitted to the residency of the 1st Sechenov Moscow Medical Institute at the department of hospital therapy, headed by the prominent Soviet cardiologist Alexander Myasnikov, the director of the Institute of Therapy of the Academy of Medical Sciences of the USSR.
After defending his thesis in 1956, he worked for two years as a general practitioner in the 1st Hospital of the Fourth Main Directorate under the USSR Ministry of Health.
In 1959, at the invitation of Myasnikov, Chazov began to work at the Institute of Therapy as a senior researcher.
In 1963, after defending his doctoral thesis, Evgeny Chazov was appointed deputy director of the Institute of Therapy for science.
In 1965, he was awarded the title of professor, in the same year, after the death of Alexander Myasnikov, he was appointed director of the Institute of Therapy of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences, which was reorganized in February 1967 into the Myasnikov Scientific Research Institute of Cardiology. In 1967-1986 he was the Head of IV Main Directorate of the USSR Ministry of Health.
Since 1976 - Director of All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (from 1991-1997 - Cardiology Scientific Center of RAMS; in 1997 it was reorganized into Russian Cardiology Scientific Production Complex of the Russian Ministry of Health).
In 1968-1986 - Deputy Minister, in 1987-1990 - Minister of Health of the USSR. Since 1990 he was the director of All-Union Cardiology Scientific Center of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences (now the Russian Cardiology Scientific Production Complex of the Russian Ministry of Health) and then he became the honorary director.
Since 2008 Evgeny Chazov was a member of the expert council of the Russian Ministry of Health and the chief cardiologist of the Russian Ministry of Health.
Evgeny Chazov became well-known and world-renowned due to his fundamental and clinical research in the field of cardiovascular diseases. The main directions of his scientific activity are the study of mechanisms of development and treatment of atherosclerosis, issues of thrombosis and thrombolytic therapy, pathogenesis and treatment of acute myocardial infarction.
The method of thrombolysis, which he created in the 1960s, is widely used to treat patients with myocardial infarction.
Evgeny Chazov was awarded the Lenin Prize in 1982 for the creation of highly effective thrombolytics.
In 1969 Evgeny Chazov was awarded the State Prize of the USSR for the development and practical implementation of the treatment system for myocardial infarction patients, which included pre-hospital care, the creation of the country's first intensive care units and new therapy regimens. This system functions today not only in Russia and CIS countries, but also in foreign countries.
The prevention and rehabilitation of the patients with cardiovascular diseases, developed by Evgeny Chazov and his students, which allowed to prevent the disease development and to restore the patients' ability to work, had great practical importance. The work was awarded the second State Prize of the USSR in 1976.
In 1991 he was awarded for the third time the State Prize of the USSR for the creation of the elements of special equipment.
In 2004 Evgeny Chazov together with a group of scientists was awarded the State Prize of the Russian Federation in the field of science and technology for the creation and practical introduction of a new original antiarrhythmic drug "Nibentan".
Evgeny Ivanovich is the creator of the generally recognized school of cardiologists. Among his students are academicians, professors and doctors of sciences, who work not only in the Cardiology Center and different regions of Russia, but practically in all former republics of the USSR, Europe and the United States. Under Chazov's supervision over 30 doctoral theses and 50 PhD theses were defended. He had authored over 560 scientific papers, 21 books and monographs, six of which had been translated into foreign languages and published in the USA, Germany, Poland, etc.
Evgeny Chazov was attending physician to several leaders of the USSR.
He was elected Corresponding Member in 1967, full member of the USSR Academy of Medical Sciences in 1971 and academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (now RAS) in 1979.
He was awarded the titles of honorary professor, doctor and full and honorary member of numerous foreign academies of sciences and universities, various scientific societies.
Evgeny Chazov is also known worldwide as a public figure. In the 1970s and 1980s, together with Bernard Laun (USA), he initiated and for many years co-chaired the international movement "World Doctors for the Prevention of Nuclear War". In 1985, this movement was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
In 1982-1990 was a member of the CPSU Central Committee, was a deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 9-11 convocations.
Long-term fruitful organizational, scientific and clinical activity of Evgeny Chazov was marked with many high state awards and prizes of the USSR and Russia.
He was awarded with the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor (1978), he is three times the USSR State Prize winner (1969, 1976, 1991) and the Russian Federation State Prize winner (2004), Lenin Prize winner (1982).
Full Cavalier of the Order of Merit for the Fatherland (2009, 2004, 2014 and 2019). He was awarded four Orders of Lenin (1969, 1976, 1978, 1981), Grand Gold Medal of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after M.V. Lomonosov (2003), Gold Medal named after I.P. Pavlov (2005). I.P. Pavlov Gold Medal (2011), medals of the Russian Academy of Sciences named after S.P. Botkin (2003) and the Russian Academy of Sciences named after I.P. Pavlov (2011). S.P. Botkin and A.L. Myasnikov medals, the St. Andrew the First-Called International Prize with the Order "For Faith and Fidelity".
In 2019, Russian President Vladimir Putin awarded Yevgeny Chazov with the Peter Stolypin Medal of the First Degree.
Evgeny Chazov was also awarded the Albert Schweitzer Gold Medal (established by the European Academy of Natural Sciences), orders and medals of Belgium, France, Serbia and Montenegro, Cuba, Mongolia, Poland, South Korea, CIS countries and many others.
In 1997 Evgeny Chazov has been awarded by Léon Bernard Foundation with the medal "For outstanding services in the field of public medicine" (World Health Organization).
On November 12, 2021 Evgeny Chazov passed away.
