ONUKA (Ukrainian "Onuka", granddaughter) is a Ukrainian electro-folk band, created in 2013. The co-authors of the project are her vocalist Natalia Zhizhchenko and Evgeny Filatov
Natalya Alexandrovna Zhyzhchenko (Nata Zhyzhchenko; March 22, 1985, Kiev) is a Ukrainian multi-instrumentalist, frontwoman of the ONUKA group, a former member of the Tomato Jaws and KOOQLA groups.
The initiator and face of the project Natalia Zhizhchenko previously participated in Tomato Jaws and KOOQLA. In the ONUKA group, she is both a vocalist, and the author of music and lyrics, and the main ideologist. On stage, in addition to vocals, she plays the flute (flute), ocarina, omnicord, small percussion instruments, and also controls the playback of samples.
In addition to Nata, Maria Sorokina (drums), Daria Sert (keys), Evgeny Yovenko (bandura) also participate in the project. During large-scale live performances, they are joined by another trio of wind instruments - trombones, horn, trembita . There are 11 musicians in the expanded composition of the group.
With its name, the ONUKA project refers to the fact that the soloist of the group is the granddaughter of Alexander Nikitich Shlenchik, a famous master of folk musical instruments
The band's first single, "Look", was released in October 2013. At the end of December 2013, a video for this composition was released, directed by the leader of The Maneken Evgeny Filatov. The group's stage debut took place on June 13, 2014, when the project's half-hour program was presented at The Maneken's concert at the Sentrum club in Kiev.
At the beginning of 2016, the mini-album "VIDLIK" was released, the theme of which is related to the Chernobyl disaster and its impact. The mini-album was the first release of the new eponymous label founded in January 2016. The authors of the music were Nata Zhizhchenko and Evgeny Filatov. The texts were written by Nata Zhyzhchenko, and the composition "Svitanok" uses a fragment of a poem by the Kiev street art artist Jerzy Konopie. The composition "19 86" used recordings of the conversations of fire department dispatchers on the day of the accident. The mini-album consists of five compositions in Ukrainian and English
In September 2018, a video was presented for the STRUM track from the MOZAЇKA album, created together with Alan Badoev. The clip was filmed at a landfill in Podgortsy near Kiev; it addresses the problem of environmental pollution with household waste. The presentation of the video took place at the waste sorting station, and the funds from Youtube monetization are planned to be transferred to the public organization "Ukraine without Smitya".
The album was named the best Ukrainian album of the year by APrize 2019
