After the defeat in the Soviet-Ukrainian War (1917 - 1921) Ukraine was divided between two states - Poland and the Soviet Union.
Poland occupied the western part of Ukraine, and the Soviet Union - the eastern.
After the Partition of Poland in 1939, the western part of Ukraine was also occupied by the USSR.
Ukraine gained independence from the USSR on August 24, 1991.
Leonid Kravchuk was elected the first president of the state, the "party of power" remained in power.

On August 24, 1991, the resolution "On Military Formations in Ukraine" was adopted, and on December 6, the law "On the Armed Forces of Ukraine" was adopted, according to which the first servicemen were brought to a new oath.
The aggravation of the socio-economic situation in the country caused the first political crisis in the young country - early presidential elections in 1994, which were won by Leonid Kuchma, former director of Pivdenmash and prime minister, a representative of the "red directorate".
The composition of the Verkhovna Rada was renewed for the first time.
The Communists won the most seats - 96, the People's Movement - 20, the Peasants' Party - 18 and the Socialist Party - 14, Alexander Moroz was elected chairman, which testified to the dominance of left-wing forces.
After the election on February 7, 2010, Viktor Yanukovych became president.
His first decision was to put his opponent, Yulia Tymoshenko, behind bars.
He also signed the so-called "Kharkov agreements" with Russia, which, in exchange for discounts on gas, allows Russia to keep its ships in the port of Sevastopol until 2042.
He refused to sign the EU Association Agreement. He broke the pen when he only needed to sign.
At that time, the police brutally dispersed a peaceful rally of students who were against such a policy.
After that, the events of Euromaidan began, which later grew into the Revolution of Dignity.
