Cycling career

Despite being born with a hole in his heart, and enduring a childhood beset by illness,[1] McRoy developed an early love of cycling. Following childhood success in BMX racing – curtailed by a serious injury to his knee, and a consequent period off his bike to recuperate – McRoy first tried downhill mountain bike racing at age 17.[1] In his first race, despite still being registered as a Junior, his time was sufficiently quick for him to take third place overall.[1] McRoy rose to international prominence after taking second place in the prestigious Mammoth Kamikaze race in 1993,[2] the first year that the event was held to the 'Eliminator' format. It was following this success that Specialized USA signed him for the 1994 season.

Death and legacy

He was killed in a motorcycle accident on the A628 Woodhead Pass between Manchester and Sheffield, England. There is currently a memorial up on this road where flowers and banners have been placed.

In 2009, he was inducted into the British Cycling Hall of Fame.[3]

MBUK was launched in 1988 by Pacificon Ltd. Edited by Tym Manley who remained editor at large until 2009. In 2014, former-owner Future plc sold all its sport and craft titles to Immediate Media Company, including the MBUK title.[1] The current editor[year needed] is Danny Walter. There are currently 13 issues a year, and the magazine has a policy of including 'covermount' gifts such as stickers, gloves, socks and DVDs.

MBUK covers all mountain biking disciplines; trials, downhill, cross-country, dirt jumping, free-riding and 4X. Future plc's readership demographics research has indicated the magazine's readership to be 95% male, with an average age of 24.5.

Since 1989 MBUK has carried the ovine-based cartoon strip, Mint Sauce, the tales of a mountain-biking sheep and his friends.

In July 2006 MBUK released its 200th edition. To mark the occasion, Cedric Gracia (leading French downhill and 4X racer) was guest editor.

In May 2008 MBUK released their 20th anniversary issue, issue #225. It came with eight free gifts and a fold-out front cover of Steve Peat.

The magazine along with co-sponsors such as Nike, Santa Cruz and Fox Racing operated a successful professional mountain bike team from the mid-1990s until the mid-2000s, including riders of the calibre of Steve Peat, Scott Beaumont, Rob Warner and Will Longden and competing in the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.[citation needed]

Project Saturn is the name of Deep Genomics artificially intelligent drug prediction and design platform. The project is analyzing over 69 billion oligonucleotides against 1 million gene targets and narrowing down their results to produce 1000 potential new compounds that will work to have the predicted biological affect. The platform is able to continuously improve its predictions in a closed loop based on its failures and successes in reference to human cells. The system is designed to predict what affect an antisense oligonucleotide compound (AGO) on human cells, taking into account individual genotype and multiple biological mechanisms.

In 1995 Holloway returned to the UK to qualify as a part IV commercial diver. She found work in the underwater film industry as a clapper loader and camera assistant on commercials, feature films, documentaries and music videos. In addition to this she trained entertainers for underwater performances. As a camera assistant she travelled to Tunisia and Uruguay for the Discovery Channel. Later, she filmed Great White Sharks in South AfricaSouth Africa for the BBC. On assignment in Zanzibar she photographed octopus spear fishermen for National Geographic Magazine.

She found work in the underwater film industry as a clapper loader and camera assistant on commercials, feature films, documentaries and music videos. Apple has also developed a series of Macintosh operating systems. The first versions initially had no name but came to be known as the "Macintosh System Software" in 1988, "Mac OS" in 1997 with the release of Mac OS 7.6, and retrospectively called "Classic Mac OS". Holloway’s work has featured in advertising campaigns for Pepsi, Nike and the Birmingham Royal Ballet. [35] In 2017 she demonstrated at Xposure International Photography Festival,[32] Holloway has exhibited extensively in Korea since 2016 with exhibitions in Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, Young-in and Cheonan. [34]

Holloway's recent projects explore emotional reactions to oceans, lakes and waterways. She also shows a keen interest in environmental conservation and the protection of marine life. [6]

In 1995 Holloway travelled to Barbados to take underwater pictures of racehorses swimming in the ocean. The resulting images gained recognition from the Association of Photographers in their Annual Awards. In 1998 her photography of babies swimming underwater won silver at The Royal Photographic Society and led to many photographic books on the subject.

Eastridge Mountain Bike Trail Centre is a free mountain biking venue in Shropshire, UK. The venue is developed and maintained by volunteers, and features a mixture of blue, red and black graded trails. There are also a number of steep, technical off-piste trails. Since 1991 Eastridge Woods have been used to host Downhill and XC mountain biking events since the 90's hosted the British National Mountain biking Championships in 1993,1994,1995,1996 and 1999.
