MoonbeamMoonbeam is a bridge platform focused on interoperability between Ethereum and Polkadot. Moonbeam aims to provide developers with a lower entry threshold for developing Ethereum-compatible dapps on a more cost-effective platform like Polkadot. This blockchain interoperability allows developers to leverage their existing Ethereum smart contracts and dApp interfaces to migrate to Moonbeam, providing cross-liquidity between Ethereum and Polkadot.
Moonriver is Moonbeam's affiliate network. Moonriver is a CanaryNet based in Kusama where new code can be submitted, tested and verified under real economic conditions. Glimmer (GLMR) is the utility token of the Moonbeam Network, Moonbeam’s primary deployment on the Polkadot network that serves as a developer-friendly parachain. Moonbeam will launch after Moonriver, it’s “Canarynet.”
As a decentralized smart contract platform, Moonbeam requires the Glimmer token to function. This token is central to the design of Moonbeam and cannot be removed without sacrificing essential functionality. Some of the uses of the Glimmer token on Moonbeam include:
- Supporting the gas metering of smart contract execution
- Incentivizing collators and powering the mechanics around the creation of a decentralized node infrastructure on which the platform can run
- Facilitating the on-chain governance mechanism including proposing referenda, electing council members, voting, etc
- Paying for transaction fees on the network
