Abacus develops computer software in a variety of business management areas including finance, human resources, and administration, as well as production and service. Abacus functions as an integrated and modularly structured overall ERP solution. The company was founded by three graduates from the University of St. Gallen in 1985, all of whom are active in the company. One of the three, Claudio Hintermann is the current CEO at Abacus. The company has around 300 employees at their Wittenbach location. They also have offices in Biel, Thalwil, Munich, Hamburg and Stuttgart, employing around 600 people across their various locations.

The company also provides conference and event hosting through AbaHome, their auditorium. They also have two resturaunts, El Covo and Segreto.
