A couple of years ago, a wave of mysterious disappearances swept across the planet — about two percent of the world's population disappeared in an unknown direction. Scientists have found no explanation, no system, no connection with other events. The remaining people experienced losses in different ways — someone saw God's providence in this and joined churches and sects, someone considered it a punishment and went all out, someone is hiding from pain, someone is looking for answers. The small town of Mapleton is experiencing all the variety of reactions to the "Ascension", it has its mute mourners, its mad prophets, its fighters with depression. There is only no hero capable of rallying the inhabitants on the eve of great misfortunes.
