Adobe Firefly is a family of AI models for Adobe's suite of apps and services, specifically AI for generating media content. Firefly is an expansion of previous generative AI tools introduced by Adobe for Photoshop, Express, and Lightroom during its 2022 Max conference. Firefly will be integrated directly into Adobe's Creative Cloud, Document Cloud, Experience Cloud, and Adobe Express workflows, becoming a part of a series of new Adobe Sensei generative AI services. Adobe says the AI models are trained on content that is licensed or out of copyright, not from artists' work found across the internet.
Adobe unveiled Firefly on March 21, 2023, releasing a beta focused on commercial users with two initial tools. The first allows users to input natural language prompts and receive an image, similar to other generative AI image models, such as DALL-E and Midjourney. The second generates stylized text, applying styles or textures to lettering and fonts. At launch, the Firefly beta is only available through the website, but Adobe stated it will soon be integrated across its apps, including Express, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Adobe Experience Manager. During the beta release, Adobe plans to engage with the creative community to understand the best ways to evolve its new technology, integrating it further into its applications.
Firefly's first models were trained on hundreds of millions of Adobe Stock images, openly licensed content, and public domain content. Firefly aims to not generate based on other people's brands or intellectual property. Adobe plans to introduce a “Do Not Train” tag to allow creators to opt out of using their content for model training. Adobe also aims to enable customers to monetize their creations by developing a compensation model for Adobe Stock creators.
