Broner grew up in Cincinnati, Ohio, and started boxing at the age of six. He said that sports saved him from living on the street.Broner finished his amateur career with 319 fights under his belt, with a record of 300 wins and 19 losses.Broner turned professional on May 31, 2008 and won three times in a row in the first round against Allante. Davis, David Warren Huffman and Ramon Flores. In Broner's fourth fight, he faced Terrence Jett at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on the undercard of the Ricky Hatton vs. Paulie Malignaggi fight. . Broner defeated Jett by stoppage in the sixth round. In Broner's fifth professional fight and the 2008 final, he faced Eric Riker without competing.In January 2009 , he was forced to go the distance with Jose Alfredo Lugo at Staples Center in the undercard of Shane Mosley vs. Antonio Margarito . Broner returned to the ring in March, defeating Eric Riker by unanimous decision. Three weeks later, Broner stopped Angel Rodriguez in the fourth round. In his eighth fight, Broner came up to eight rounds in a hard-fought fight with Fernando Quintero, pulling out a controversial majority decision victory in a bout that Quintero took on notice for 4 days. In June, at Staples Center, Broner met with Australian William Kickett, scoring a knockout in the sixth round. In the undercard of Juan Diaz against Paul Malignaggi in Houston, Broner dealt with Edgar Portillo, the victory in the first round was stopped. Broner defeated Henry White Jr. via knockout in September and ended his busy year against Tommy Atencio. Broner stopped Atencio in the first round, for the sixth time in thirteen fights. Broner then won in the fourth round over Roberto Acevedo. In 2010, Broner fought 4 more times against Rafael Lore, Carlos Claudio, Guillermo Sanchez and Ilido Julio, stopping them all.
Broner vs. Ponce De Leon
Broner took his first serious step in weight when he competed with former bantamweight champion Daniel Ponce de Leon on March 5, 2011. In a really very intense fight, Broner won a controversial victory by unanimous decision. Broner started slowly, failing to break through De Leon's high defense. Broner hit hard in the fourth, wounding De Leon with a body shot. Broner slowed down in the middle and subsequent rounds, but delivered accurate punches, while De Leon turned out to be a more loaded fighter. On CompuBox, Broner landed 126 of his 351 (36%) punches, and De Leon landed 127 of 592 (21%) punches. Harold Lederman scored 96-94 points in favor of Ponce De Leon.
Broner v. Litzau
Broner's next fight was on the HBO show Boxing After Dark from Guadalajara, Mexico, Broner met the contender for the top ten featherweight Jason Litzau in a fight scheduled for ten rounds. Broner did a jump rope combo at the end of the first, with a straight right, left hook and then a right uppercut, severely injuring the Minnesotan. He crumpled up, and the referee jumped when he saw that he was not there. The official finish came at 2:58 of the first round.
Broner vs. Rodriguez
After an unsuccessful fight with Ricky Burns, the former WBO featherweight champion, on November 26, 2011, Broner fought with rival Vicente Martin Rodriguez in the undercard of the Saul Alvarez vs. Kermit Cintron battle card on HBO as part of a double header. He defeated Rodriguez by knockout in the third round and won the vacant WBO Super Featherweight title.Broner made a successful first defense of his WBO belt against 10 Super Lightweight title contender and mandatory challenger Eloy Perez on February 25, 2012, HBO TV channel. . With a knockout victory. Broner controlled the pace and actions from start to finish, beating Perez and easily taking him down. The fight ended when Broner hit Perez with a straight arm and then another right as Perez was falling.Broner's next scheduled fight was to take place on July 21, 2012 in the USA. Bank Arena in Cincinnati, against the opponent in the first featherweight Vicente Escobedo. However, during the pre-fight weigh-in on July 20, Broner weighed 133 1/2 pounds, well over the 130-pound limit for super featherweight, and was automatically stripped of the title. The fight continued as scheduled, and Broner won by technical knockout in the 5th round when Escobedo's corner failed.
