Aegis Sciences Corporation is a forensic toxicology and healthcare laboratory that provides science-driven drug testing and consulting services. The company delivers evidence-based, clinically actionable information related to medication compliance, substance abuse, and drug-drug interactions through definitive testing of urine, oral fluid, or blood specimens. Its key industries include pain management, behavioral and mental health, substance use disorder, prenatal care, and chronic disease management.
Aegis also provides anti-doping and forensic testing services to professional and amateur sports organizations and college and university athletic programs. In July 2022, Aegis announced it was authorized to begin testing for monkeypox using the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s PCR-based Orthopoxvirus DNA assay. The company was one of five national commercial labs authorized to perform monkeypox testing in the U.S. to expand testing capacity and health care provider access. Aegis's initial monkeypox testing capacity was over 5,000 non-variola Orthopoxvirus tests per week at launch, with capacity expected to increase to over 10,000 tests per week by the first week in August 2022 to meet additional testing demand.
Aegis was also an early tester for COVID-19 beginning in April 2020. Since that time, the company has performed over 13 million COVID-19 tests and is collaborating with Walgreens to offer COVID-19 PCR testing at more than 5,200 of its pharmacy locations in all fifty U.S. states and Puerto Rico.
Aegis was founded in Tennessee as an independent lab in 1990 by David Black and his wife, Congresswoman Diane Black, after an initial partnership with Vanderbilt University. In 1991, the lab started offering drug-free workplace testing and added forensic testing for medical examiner systems and crime laboratories in 1999.
In 2010, Aegis was purchased by NY-based private equity firm Metalmark Capital. In 2014, Aegis was bought by Boston-based private equity firm Abry Partners. In November 2016, Black exited the company.
