The Air Force Institute of Technology, or AFIT, is the Air Force's graduate school of engineering and management as well as its institution for technical professional continuing education. A component of Air University and Air Education and Training Command, AFIT is committed to providing defense-focused graduate and professional continuing education and research to sustain America's air, space, and cyber forces.
AFIT works to accomplish their stated mission through four schools: the Graduate School of Engineering and Management, the School of Systems and Logistics, the Civil Engineer School, and the School of Strategic Force Studies. Through its Civilian Institution Programs, AFIT also manages the educational programs of officers enrolled in civilian universities, research centers, hospitals, and industrial organizations. Since graduate degrees were first granted in 1955, more than 18,760 master's and 795 doctor of philosophy degrees have been awarded. In addition, Air Force students attending civilian institutions have earned more than 12,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees in the past twenty years.
The Graduate School of Engineering and Management offers graduate programs leading to masters of science and doctor of philosophy degrees in engineering, applied science, and management disciplines. The school breaks into six departments: Aeronautics and Astronautics, Electrical and Computer Engineering, Engineering Physics, Mathematics and Statistics, Operational Sciences, and Systems Engineering and Management.
The School of Systems and Logistics teaches professional continuing education courses in acquisition management, logistics management, contracting, systems management, software engineering, and financial management delivered to warfighters around the globe via customer focused delivery modes including resident, on-site and online courses.
The Civil Engineer School develops and delivers civil engineer and environmental professional continuing education and provides consultation in support of the United States air and space forces.
The School of Strategic Force Studies provides undergraduate, postgraduate, and continuing education and research to worldwide students and through part-time enrollments at civilian universities. The program management overall execution of space and nuclear continuing education develop, coordinate, maintain, update and teach curriculum coordinate scheduling of courses and guest instructors.
On November 10, 1919, Col. Thurman Bane received authorization to begin instruction at the Air School of Application. The following year, the first class of nine students graduated from the newly named Air Services Engineering School.
Some of the more accomplished alumni of the Air Force Institute of Technology include General George Kenney, General Jimmy Doolittle and General Bernard Schriever, each considered Air Force pioneers. Major General Donald Lamberson, considered the "Father of High-energy Laser Weapons" earned his master's and doctorate degrees at AFIT. And astronauts Gus Grissom, Gordon Cooper and Colonel Guy Bluford earned degrees at AFIT as well.
