Alexander Grothendieck (1928-2014) was a French mathematician born in Berlin. He held citizenship in France and was also considered stateless. Grothendieck studied at the University of Montpellier and Nancy-Université. He worked as a mathematician and was the founder of the Séminaire de Géométrie Algébrique du Bois Marie.
During his career, Grothendieck supervised numerous doctoral students, including Jean Giraud, Pierre Berthelot, Michel Raynaud, Jean-Louis Verdier, Luc Illusie, Pierre Gabriel, Michel Demazure, William Messing, Hoàng Xuân Sính, and Pierre Deligne. Grothendieck's doctoral advisor was Laurent Schwartz
Alexander Grothendieck received the 1966 Fields Medal for his contributions to mathematics. He died in Saint-Girons, Ariège at the age of 86.
