Alfonso X of Castile was born on November 23, 1221, in Toledo, Spain, and passed away on April 4, 1284, in Seville. He was a citizen of the Kingdom of Castile and the Kingdom of León. Alfonso X was a person of many talents and held several occupations, including writer, astronomer, politician, composer, poet, historian, and jurist.
His father was Ferdinand III of Castile and his mother, Elisabeth of Swabia. Alfonso X of Castile had several children, including Alfonso Fernández el Niño, Violant of Castile, Berengaria of Castile, Lady of Guadalajara, James of Castile, Lord of Cameros, Peter of Castile, Lord of Ledesma, Sancho IV of Castile, Ferdinand de la Cerda, Beatrice of Castile (1242–1303), Beatrice of Castile, Marchioness of Montferrat, and John of Castile, Lord of Valencia de Campos.
He was the founder of Mesta and the owner of the Alcázar of Segovia. Alfonso X's works consisted mainly of poetry.
