Ali Javan (26 December 1926 – 12 September 2016) was an Iranian-American physicist and professor known for his works in the field of science. He was born in Tehran, Iran, and held dual citizenship in Iran and the United States.
Javan completed his education at the University of Tehran, Alborz High School, and Columbia University. He was a doctoral student of Charles H. Townes. Later in his career, Ali Javan mentored Michael Stephen Feld, a doctoral student under his supervision.
He contributed to the invention of the gas laser and was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2006. After a long and accomplished career in physics and academia, Ali Javan passed away in Los Angeles on 12 September 2016 at the age of 89.
