Andrew Jassy was born on January 13, 1968, in Scarsdale, New York. He is an American businessman who became the president and CEO of Amazon on July 5, 2021. Before his role as president and CEO, Jassy led Amazon Web Services (AWS) since its initial inception in 2003.
Jassy attended Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he graduated cum laude with a degree in government. Post-undergraduate studies, Jassy went on to obtain an MBA from Harvard Business School.
In 1997, after a five-year career with two other companies, Jassy joined Amazon along with several other Harvard MBA peers. He held a variety of titles in his early years with the company,and in 2003 he and Jeff Bezos developed the idea to create a cloud computing platform that would later be known as Amazon Web Services, which officially launched in 2006. Jassy became the head of the team, which housed fifty-seven employees.
In 2016, after being named Person of the Year by the Financial Times, Jassy was promoted from senior vice president of AWS to CEO.
In February of 2021, it was announced that Jassy would be the successor to Bezos, the CEO of Amazon, with Bezos transitioning to the role of chairman. The title became formal on July 5, 2021.
