Andy Fang is a cofounder and head of consumer engineering at DoorDash. Fang became the head of consumer engineering at DoorDash in 2019. He has also been on the board of directors since 2013, the year the company was started.
In December 2020, DoorDash had its IPO, making Fang a billionaire. His net worth is estimated at $1.1 billion in 2022. He was also named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list in 2015.
Fang cofounded DoorDash in January 2013, along with Evan Moore, Stanley Tang, and Tony Xu.He was a junior at Stanford University when he helped start the company.
In late 2012, Moore and Xu were students at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. They went out into the local community together to interview businesses about their pain points and needs to find a startup idea. While interviewing a local macaroon shop, they heard the owner turn down a delivery. That was their lightbulb moment, and they decided to start a delivery service for local restaurants.
They reached out to Fang to help them with their idea. He was an undergraduate student in the computer science program at Stanford, and he in turn reached out to fellow CS student Stanley Tang to join them. The four of them founded DoorDash, originally called Palo Alto Delivery, and started working out of a dorm on campus.
They launched the company website on January 12, 2013, and within hours received the first order— prawn pad thai and spring rolls—from a nearby Thai eatery. The founders made the first few hundred deliveries themselves, and that summer the company received $120,000 in seed money from Y Combinator for a 7 percent stake. The company changed its name to DoorDash in 2015.
Fang served as CTO from May 2013 to February 2019, after which he became the head of consumer engineering. He has also served on the board of directors since May 2013.
Fang attended Stanford University from 2010 to 2014 and earned a BS in Computer Science. While at Stanford, he was the CS106 Section Leader in the computer science department from September 2011 to June 2013. Fang was also a software engineering intern at Facebook during the summers of 2011 and 2012.
Fang graduated from high school in 2010 from The Harker School, a private k-12 school in Silicon Valley. In April 2021, Fang donated $10 million to The Harker School to establish The Alumni Scholarship Endowment Fund to provide need-based financial aid to students.
