Anyscale is a software company that provides an application development platform for distributed computing projects. The San Francisco-based company was cofounded in 2019 by Robert Nishihara, Philipp Moritz, Ion Stoica, and Michael I. Jordan. Nishihara, Morris, and Stoica are also the creators of Ray, a high-performance distributed execution framework designed for large-scale machine learning (ML) and reinforcement learning applications, which they developed at the UC Berkeley RISELab. Anyscale runs on the Ray framework to simplify distributed computer programming.
Anyscale allows applications built using Ray to be scaled out from a laptop to a cluster of machines. This eliminates the need for companies to have in-house distributed computing expertise or resources, making adoption of Ray applications easier. Anyscale instead runs Ray for its customers by hosting it on a cloud infrastructure that is fully managed by the company itself.
Since 2019, Anyscale has raised over $160 million over several funding rounds. In the company's most recent funding round on December 8, 2021, Anyscale raised a $100 million and was valued at $1 billion. The Series C round was co-led by Andreesen Horowitz and Addition Ventures and featured participation from existing investors NEA, Intel Capital, and Foundation Capital.
