Atomic Heart is a first-person shooter, role-playing game (RPG). It was launched on February 21, 2023, and can be played on consoles, such as PS5 and Xbox, as well as personal computers using operating systems, such as Microsoft Windows. It was developed by gaming studio Mundfish and reached five million players within its first month of release.
Players can choose which tier of the game they want to buy. There are three editions to choose from: standard, gold, and premium. The gold and premium editions are more expensive than the standard edition and come with added benefits, such as access to downloadable content.
Atomic Heart takes place in an alternate reality that very closely resembles the USSR in the 1950s. However, in this reality, the player fights robots and other enemies. Players view the game through the main character of the game, Major Nechaev, a special agent of the government who is sent on missions to examine suspicious situations, such as abandoned factories.
Controversy has surrounded Atomic Heart since its release. It has been perceived as pro-Russian propaganda due to its portrayal of the USSR as a quasi-utopia. The gaming studio that produced the game is also facing criticism due to its ties to Russia. It has Russian investments and several of the founders are Russian. One of the founders was also a manager at one of Russia's largest social networks, which is reportedly being leveraged to spread pro-Russia propaganda.
Atomic Heart's parent company has stated they do not have ties to any government.
