Biography
Born in Châlons-sur-Saone, graduated from the Higher Normal School. From 1879 to 1908 he was director of the Toulouse Observatory and taught at the University of Toulouse, was dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences of this university. From 1908-1926 he was director of the Paris Observatory.
The main works in the field of celestial mechanics, in particular, studies of the motion of Saturn's satellites, as well as procedures for standardizing time. He was president of the World Bureau of Time and also a member of the Bureau of Longitudes.
A crater on the Moon and asteroids 1280 and 11764 are named in his honor.
