A biofilm is made up of microorganisms and their secretions which cause them to stick to each other and to a surface, such as in dental plaque and pond scum. Biofilms form when free-floating microorganisms attach to a surface by producing extracellular polymeric substances. Successive layers of microorganism and extracellular polymeric substances result if formation of complex 3D structures.
