Biomilq is a North Carolina-based biotechnology company with a focus on infant feeding options. It is developing technology that can replicate the nutritional profile of breastmilk so it can be used as an alternative to natural breastmilk in the event that mothers cannot produce it for the recommended six months.
The company is using a laboratory to grow breastmilk from isolated mammary cells that are housed in a bioreactor. As of April 2020, the company has grown a cultured version of breastmilk which contains lactose and casein. To grow the cells, they are placed in a nutrient-dense liquid and Biomilq is researching ways to compartmentalize the cells so that the milk is not secreted into the liquid in which it grows. As research is being conducted for the breastmilk, the company is focusing on finding an alternative feeding solution with similar nutrients to breastmilk. The company utilizes scientists, pediatricians, and the lactation community to gain information in order to develop the product.
