Birkman International is a behavioral and occupational assessment company. The company assesses personality through a proprietary method founded by psychologist and company founder Roger Birkman. Known as the Birkman Method, it works to better understand interpersonal dynamics and achieve higher performance through positive psychology. The method is developed to provide users insights into a person's interests, usual behaviors, needs, and stress behaviors, in reports that are meant to be empowering and constructive. The method is used by HR professionals for organizational development and by life coaches, career counselors, educators, and consultants.
The company was founded in 1951 by Roger Birkman and is headquartered in Houston, Texas.
The Birkman Method is a test of social comprehension developed by Roger Birkman to measure human characteristics Birkman saw as influencing behaviors, motivation, and perceptions. The method attempting to describe deeply rooted perceptions is a core differentiator of the Birkman Method as it works as an instrument to tap into how someone is likely to behave and also why. The method looks at four key perspectives of a person—their motivation, self-perception, social perception, and mindset—and uses the data from the test to understand how these perspectives influence each other and how well an individual will fit into an organization or role.
Based on the Birkman Method, Birkman International developed a series of solutions for different organizational development needs. This includes leadership and development coaching, team effectiveness solutions, talent development, engagement solutions, hiring and selection solutions, and succession planning solutions.
