Bombas is a New York-based apparel company with a socially conscious business model—the company donates a product for every product they sell. It was founded in 2013 and has the stated mission of helping those experiencing homelessness by providing apparel basics, such as socks and underwear. The name of the company means "bumblebee" in Latin, and the founders of the company explain they chose that name due to the altruistic nature of bees and how they work together to make their hive better. The founders want to use a similar nature to be the foundation of their company. Bombas initially raised funding through crowdfunding and was on the sixth season of the TV show Shark Tank, and investor and entrepreneur Daymond John invested in the company.
Bombas began by selling socks—the most requested item at shelters for people experiencing homelessness. As mentioned previously, the company donates a pair of socks for every pair that is bought. The company states it conducted research and design prior to releasing its first pair of socks. Bombas socks are made with cotton and merino wool and are designed for comfort with a honeycomb structure for support at the midfoot area and the removal of the stitch that traditionally runs along the toes of socks.
From 2019 to 2021, the company expanded its products to include t-shirts, underwear, and slippers with the same business model of donating an item for every one purchased. The products are sold online through the Bombas website and can be bought in stores with which the company has partnerships, including Nordstrom, Anthropologie, and Saks Fifth Avenue.
The pricing of Bombas products varies, with prices for a pack of baby socks starting around $17 and packs of wool socks selling at approximately $78. The pricing for each item can be found on the company's website.
