Boston Engineering is pleased to propose CONEXUS (Communication and Operation Node for Expeditionary Underwater Systems), a platform-independent data and power transfer system that enables command and control of inspection class Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) for real-time, human-supervised response operations from safe standoff. Boston Engineering, and our teammates propose to provide extended standoff distances for ROVs while minimizing the risk of development and maximizing the probability of both technical and commercialization success. Our proposed effort buys down technical risk by utilizing existing, high TRL technologies we have in place, as well as leveraging COTS components as much as possible. We propose that this effort focus on the main challenges and the generation of a communications node and not the system to deliver it (a propulsion system or USV, etc.). This does not mean that delivery should not be addressed; it is important to ensure the delivery/deployment can be appropriate and feasible for the mission. CONEXUS complete solution could be deployed from any craft of opportunity without requiring EOD personnel or craft to manually emplace it for use.
