Bromine (chemical symbol - Br, from other Greek βρμμος — "fetid", also from Lat. Bromum) is a chemical element of the 17th group (according to the outdated classification - the main subgroup of the seventh group, VIIA) of the fourth period of the periodic system of chemical elements of D. I. Mendeleev, with atomic number 35.

A simple substance bromine (under normal conditions) is a chemically active nonmetal (chemical formula - Br2) - a heavy caustic liquid of red-brown color with a strong unpleasant "heavy" smell, vaguely resembling the smell of iodine and chlorine at the same time. Volatile and poisonous.
