In 1846, the University at Lewiston was established, becoming the 100th American college in order of founding. The school did not become Bucknell University until 1886. It gained its new name in honor of William Bucknell, who was a major benefactor at the time and one of the original trustees named in the charter establishing the University at Lewisburg. On August 20, 1851 the university held its first commencement for a graduating class of seven men. The school allowed women to attend university classes beginning in 1883, and had its first African American graduate in 1875.

It is considered a difficult school to get into and currently has an admissions rate of about 34%.
