BuildZoom is a platform that aggregates information from building permits, contractor licenses, and other data points to help users find a contractors. The company is headquartered in San Francisco, California and was founded in 2013 by David Peterssen and Jiyan Wei.
BuildZoom participated in the W13 cohort of Y Combinator in 2013, and at the time had over 2.5 million licensed contractors in their database. The company received $120,000 in funding from Y Combinator on March 26, 2013. In a TechCrunch interview after graduating from Y Combinator, the founder of BuildZoom David Peterssen commented on his inspiration for starting the company by saying:
We were looking at other ways we could use government data, and we realized we could use it to seed the community of homeowners and contractors.
On June 25, 2013 BuildZoom completed their seed funding round with $1.4 million in funding from Formation 8 (lead investor), Digital Garage, Start Fund, Signatures Capital, Otter Rock Capital, Netprice Partners, Hydrazine Capital, YC Start Fund, Grey Wolf, Goldcrest Investments, Ullas Naik, Ted Geary, Pankaj Shah, Jason Young, and Dakin Sloss. On October 6, 2014 BuildZoom completed their second seed funding round with $2.2 million in funding from Formation 8 (lead investor), Streamlined Ventures, Goldcrest Investments, and Brendan Wallace.
On October 14, 2015 BuildZoom completed their series A funding round with $10.6 million in funding from Formation 8 (lead investor), Y Combinator, and Founders Fund. On May 23, 2017 BuildZoom completed their series A funding round with $9 million in funding from 8VC.
