Cafe X - registered under Cafe X Technologies - is a brand of coffee shop chain offering drinks made by robotic technology. The company was established in 2015 by Henry Hu, Sebastian Gomez Puerto. Café X, as of March 2020, has two outlets, both located in the following airports: San Francisco International Airport and San Jose International Airport. Prior to that, Café X had outlets around San Francisco’s downtown area.
The founder, Henry Hu, came up with the idea when he was in Singapore's Changi Airport waiting for his coffee - and realizing that there is a way to improve upon the inefficiency of a coffee shop service operation. The company then developed Cafe X, which operates a coffee shop service by utilizing robotic technology in the form of an automated robotic arm. The robotic arm functions as the barista who is responsible for making the coffee based on the given order. Although the majority of the coffee shop’s operational processes are handled by the robotic arm, each outlet still has an employee to handle the customer experience. It is also possible to order the coffee through Cafe X's mobile application before the customer arrives at the outlet.
