The Calit2 TechPortal is a business technology incubator out of the University of California, Irvine's California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology. The program is housed in the CALIT2 Building, where it offers space, access to facilities and services, mentoring, programs, and expertise to help new companies. The Calit2 TechPortal also offers a database of UCI technologies available for licensing and a database of University of California technologies that can be licensed. TechPortal helps review companies to ensure that IP and conflict-of-interest issues are closely managed.
Businesses are selected for inclusion in the incubator program, based on the potential for commercialization, extent of interactions with UCI researchers and technology, and the overall soundness of the business plan. The incubator has no stated interests in specific industries or technologies, so long as those businesses and technologies are associated with University of California, Irvine.
To be accepted by the incubator, a potential company is required to submit their application, which is reviewed by an oversight committee that also requires the potential participants to provide a short presentation and answer committee questions. The oversight committee makes their determination based on the requirement criteria and market potential and notifies the accepted companies. These potential participants are then invited to move in and work in the co-working space provided by TechPortal.
The members of the program are offered around 150 square feet of flexible lab space with month-to-month leases, with a maximum commitment of six months and a maximum occupancy of two years. The participating companies of the program have to be based on University of California technology or founded by University of California, Irvine faculty, staff, or students. The following are facilities offered for use in the program:
- Bio-organic clean room facility
