She was born December 1, 1960 in Flushing, Long Island, New York (state), USA.
Her mother, Muriel Alt, worked as a model before her marriage, to Anthony Alt, Fire Chief of the New York City Fire Department.
Carol has two sisters, Christine and Karen, and a brother.
She grew up in East Williston, NY and was educated at Wheatley School and Hofstra University.
Her first major modeling success came in 1980 when she was featured on the cover of Harper's Bazaar magazine but really shot to fame in 1982 when she was featured on the cover of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue.
Carol Alt was one of the first models to turn fame in one field into success in others, such as acting, producing and writing books.
Since 1986 she has been one of the leads in a variety of movies; mostly Italian, but one of her new starring roles was in the Canadian film "Curse of Dead Lake" (2004).
She has been invited to voice roles on television.
She wrote the book Eating Raw.
Received 5th place in the "Best 10 Models of All Time" poll, trailing only Katie Ireland, Christie Brinkley, Gisele Bündchen and Cindy Crawford.
In September 2013, she became a television host for Fox News.
