Mead received his education at the California Institute of Technology. He is the founder of two companies, Impinj and Synpatic.
Carver Mead had R. D. Middlebrook as his doctoral advisor. He has advised several doctoral students, including John Platt (computer scientist), Rahul Sarpeshkar, Kwabena Boahen, John Wawrzynek, and David Y. Feinstein.
In 2009, Mead was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
