Childe Hassam - American impressionist painter. Already in his youth, Gassam was an enthusiastic draughtsman and watercolorist. In 1877 he dropped out of school, at first worked as a woodcutter, making graphic illustrations for magazines such as The Century Magazine, Harper's Weekly and Scribner's Monthly. In 1878, he began attending evening courses at the Boston Art Club and the Lowell Institute. During this period, he painted his first landscapes in a naturalistic style: mostly views of Boston and its surroundings. In 1882, Gassam's first solo exhibition took place, where he sold his canvases for the first time.
