Description
Bartholomew's Church in Drohobych is a single-nave church with an elongated faceted five-walled altar .
The facades of the brick walls of the temple and the buttresses are decorated with a lacy diamond -shaped ornament , which is also made of brick, which has a dark brown or dark red watering.
The nave of the church has high stepped Gothic pediments on the western and eastern facades .
The church looks monumental due to the lack of small divisions.
In the interior of the temple there are four supporting pillars bearing the system of cross vaults ; in the altar part - a ribbed vault.
Information about the altar:
The altar consists of 3 parts (width 8 m, height approx. 15.5 m).
In the side parts of the altar there are wooden white figures of the Apostles Peter and Paul, on the top of the side parts there are oil paintings painted in Drohobych, which represent the archangels Gabriel and Raphael. In the middle of the altar, the tabernacle is surrounded by a series of golden columns, above which are two angels, and between them the icon of the Mother of God of Perpetual Help (an icon that is more than 100 years old, is a Roman copy of Stryi).
In the central part of the altar is a crucifix, which was saved from burning. Above the cross is the figure of St. Bartholomew the Apostle, and at the end of the altar is the figure of St. Archangel Michael, made by a carver from the vicinity of Drohobych. The most important elements of the tabernacle, figures and images are illuminated by LED lighting.
For the Drohobych Church of the Holy Apostle Bartholomew is, as for all Gothic architecture, a profound revelation of the inner temple space.
During the restoration work carried out in the church in the XVIII century , the interiors of the church were repainted by the artist Andriy Solitsky in the late Baroque style . In addition to religious drawings, there were also compositions on historical themes: the scene of the defeat of the Drohobych church by the Cossacks Bohdan Khmelnytsky and the Tatars in 1648 , the scene of the Austrian Emperor Joseph II granting ancient rights to Drohobych and others. The frescoes were made by master Borsch around 1800 . Stained glass windows were made in the XIX century .
Many valuable interior items perished during the Second World War , and even more were destroyed by the Bolshevik barbarians, but several interesting objects still survive. These are, in particular, fragments of Solitsky's paintings, an ancient fresco depicting St. Christopher , which combines the artistic traditions of the late Gothic and Renaissance. Also in the church you can see the Renaissance tombstone of Kateryna Ramultova, made by Sebastian Czechek in 1572 . Stained glass windows designed by 19th century artists J. Matejko, S. Wyspianski and J. Mehoffer are also noteworthy. An ancient icon has been preserved in the altar part of the temple, written by the famous Italian artist Tommaso Dolabella. Ukrainian artist and carver Ivan Lukych Wendzilovych also worked on the interior decoration.
Today the Church of the Holy Apostle Bartholomew is served by priests from the Drohobych Roman Catholic Parish of the Holy Apostle Bartholomew. The church belongs to the Stryi deanery of the RCC.
