Citizen, previously known as Vigilante, is a company that develops an application that users can use to share information about local crimes in real-time. The company was established in 2015 by Andrew Frame, JD Maresco, and Luis Samaniego. Citizen aims to help people through providing access to information about ongoing local criminal activities in order to keep themselves safe. Citizen is based in New York City, New York, and as of June 2019, has operations in New York City, Los Angeles, Baltimore, Philadelphia, and San Francisco.
Citizen provides a mobile-based application that allows users to be notified of ongoing crimes happening in their city. This information is provided by Citizen through 911 police reports. Users who are in the area can add additional information about the ongoing situation, including a live-stream. This information would help others users determine what actions to take to keep themselves safe, in addition to staying updated about the situation.
Since 2015, Citizen has managed to raise a total fund of $13 million through four funding rounds, with its most recently held one being a Venture Round in June 2018. The company has received capital from investors including Chetrit Ventures, Sequoia Capital, and RRE Ventures.
