CityDAO is creating a network of assets on chain, beginning with a single parcel of land in Wyoming. Every parcel of land is a Non Fungible Token (NFT) that can be owned collectively by the Decentralized Autonomous Organization (DAO) or by individuals. The organization is building a city on the Ethereum blockchain, beginning by collectively purchasing land in Wyoming utilizing the Wyoming DAO LLC law. Parcel 0 is the first piece of land on chain, and users get access by becoming citizens and joining the Discord channel.
The organization is putting land on the blockchain to facilitate land transfers, programmable digital records, and ownership through crowdfunding. CityDAO began with Wyoming and plans to purchase land in other parts of the United States and the world. The organization kicked off operations in Wyoming as a result of the state's 2021 DAO law, which recognizes DAO governance of LLC corporations. The citizens decide what the land is used for by voting on what happens with the land. Managed by the community, the organization is specifically looking out for individuals to help with the following categories:
- Legal: navigating DAO law, property rights and zoning
- Development: real estate ownership on chain with Solidity and Web3
- Marketing: finding adjacent communities and publicizing the city
- Land use: Determining usage, governance, and control of the land
- Meme making
- Community sustainability
The project is seeking to develop a digital representation of physical land. Individuals purchase pieces of land in the real world in Wyoming, then sell the rights of governance. To govern and become citizens, users purchase a certificate of citizenship, which is a Non Fungible Token. Though the land on the blockchain is connected with a physical plot of land, citizens do not own any piece of the land and can only vote on policy changes and laws to decide what happens on it. There are plans to include the placement of buildings and structures on the land.
In CityDAO, there are three different levels of citizenship, and each of them come with an upgrade in privileges from lowest to highest.
- Citizen: This is regarded as the novice level of CityDAO. The regular citizen gets basic voting rights and is granted access to the Discord channel. Citizens also get access to land purchasing rights for the future when extra land is gotten by CityDao.
- Founding Citizen: This is regarded as high-class citizenship. Having this certificate gives citizens access to land auctions. Whenever fresh land is available, these citizens can bid for part of it before the average citizen.
- First Citizen: The first citizen, like the name implies, refers to the first group of people who purchased a CityDao certificate. These certificates are limited, and first citizens get to name parcels of land. They have the right to call them anything they want, name them after themselves or their loved ones, and all the other citizens would have to refer to the land by that name. The first citizen also gets the benefits that Founding Citizens receive.
During the initial month, individuals could get citizenship for 1ETH (~3,200USD), a founding citizenship was about 10 ETH, and the First Citizen was auctioned and sold for about 6 ETH. The prices constantly change as each of the certificates is a Non Fungible Token. Founding citizenship could be purchased for 28 ETH (~123,000USD) on OpenSea, an NFT platform supporting the CityDao project. First Citizenship can cost around 1,200 ETH (~ 5.2 million USD.)
In January 2022, CityDAO, fell victim to a $95,000 hack by hackers on the Discord messaging site. An attacker hacked into one of the project's administrative accounts on Discord and the announcement was made on the group's Twitter account. The fraudster issued a faux land drop from the administrator's account and got away with 29.67 ETH ($95,000) in the process. The affected administrator referred to as Lyons800 tweeted later that the hack was "a ridiculous security breach from Discord."
"EMERGENCY NOTICE. A CityDAO Discord admin account has been hacked. THERE IS NO LAND DROP. DO NOT CONNECT YOUR WALLET," CityDAO tweeted.
