Climeworks is a developer of carbon dioxide removal technology through direct air capture plants. The concept for the company was originally developed at ETH Zurich where its founders were conducting their studies for their master's degrees. Climeworks has a partnership with Carbfix, which uses its technology to store CO₂ underground through natural processes. The company works in industries such as clean technology, commercial agriculture, food and beverage industries, the energy sector, and the automotive industry.
The company's products are modular CO₂ collectors, which are capable of being stacked. The collectors trap atmospheric carbon with a filter, which is then harnessed into CO₂ gas and is sold to various industries. It can be used in carbonated drinks or for producing carbon-neutral hydrocarbon fuels and materials.
The CO₂ can also be pumped into the ground using the aforementioned partner company, Carbfix, by mixing it with water. The CO₂ reacts with basalt rock and turns into stone within a few years.
Consumers and businesses can use the services provided by Climeworks through a monthly subscription. Subscriptions vary with the amount of carbon dioxide that would be removed from the air, starting at 187 pounds per year.
